SAINT’S ALIVE
£1000-£2000

Launched 30 years ago, the 480 ES is the closest Volvo came to replacing the earlier car in style and spirit although this Renault-powered ES, the first front-wheel drive Volvo, was more downmarket. Not that you’d know it from the electronic dash display and the pop-up headlamps. Initially using Renault’s 1.7-litre engine, a rather rapid 2-litre turbo surfaced in 1989 and where most classic interest lies. When the range bowed out in 1995 it was overshadowed by the manic 850 T5 saloon and estate. And that’s another story!
