Don’t be seduced by speed! Slowly does it is the best way

So you’ve bought your dream project and you’re itching to crack on. But hold, slow down and have a cuppa. Before you reduce your classic to a pile of cardboard boxes think it through like a pro first to save a lot of time, hassle and expense later on!

  • Don’t rush into things! Set aside a particular area and do it carefully to avoid further damaging components which may be difficult or impossible to replace later on. Also don’t dismantle simply for the sake of it; certain assemblies are best kept together until you are ready to restore them.
  • Decide on a plan of action – what bit of your prized project are you going to tackle first? Logically it has to be the body because the car is going nowhere if this is impossible to repair and penny to a pound the bulk of the budget will be swallowed up here. Most people advise starting from one end and working your way through the car thoroughly as doing bits here and there simply wastes time and effort, plus may be ruined if disturbed at a later date.
  • A not too rigid timetable is useful – but only to get you energised rather than rushing to the finishing line and ruining the project. It’s a hobby remember not three years of hard labour!
  • Catch it on camera. Digitals and smart phones are wonderful devices as they allow you to take unlimited photos of your vehicle before, during and after the strip down but be sure to file them as a vital reference for the future. Don’t delete them as this record will prove invaluable if you go to sell the vehicle once completed.
  • Make a thorough list as you go along; what’s been removed, what needs doing and so on. As each component is renovated or replaced, note this on the list along with the level of overhaul required. Once any parts are cleaned, refurbished or painted etc, treat them as if they were new and store them carefully – not chucking them back into cardboard boxes! Label and logically store them.
  • Never discard anything, well not until you have sourced correct replacements – and even then consider keeping the old component as useful spares. Even worn or broken, original parts can sometimes be reconditioned, or at the very least used as patterns to make good replacements, while anything is saleable on eBay!

Do it once, PROPERLY

There’s no better time to repair everything to your satisfaction right here, right now rather than a bodge repair that you’ll get done properly later – you rarely will… If an area is stalling because of this – move on to something else while you save up etc.
