F WORD IS TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE

You can pick this thoroughly modern MG up for pennies. Partly that’s because of large number still on our roads, but it’s also due to the car’s reputation for rotten reliability and build quality. And that’s a shame because the MGF remains a fine sports car.

Mid-engined, yet the handling is predictable and secure while the Allegro-based Hydragas suspension gave this sports car a saloon-like ride an area where later conventionally sprung TF disappointed. Fast in top VVC and Trophy guises, a good one is a serious sportster and all are good for touring. Some specialists are now offering fully refurbished cars and there’s excellent nationwide club support.
