The allure of owning a prestigious Mercedes is overwhelming and yet what is widely regarded as the best marque in the world is surprisingly affordable and attainable…

In this special 15 page Classic Motoring guide, we look at what we feel are the best classic and modern buys – not just the superb SLs but also saloons and 4x4s – to suit all tastes and pockets. Speaking of which, one of the many attractions of owning the coveted pointed star is the support all models enjoy via an army of Mercedes specialists. Even the factory still helps because spares for all models, irrespective of age, can be obtained through main dealers.

So why not make it a Merc in 2019?

Do club together though

The Mercedes-Benz Club was formed in 1952 and is the oldest club for the marque in the world. Just as it did in 1952, the Club caters for owners and enthusiasts of all models – from the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen to the latest AMG cars and electric-powered Smarts.

For anyone trying to find a good Mercedes, or looking after or restoring one, the Club’s most important benefits are its strong team of Technical Advisers and Model Register Captains. They are backed up with free access to the Mercedes-Benz Electronic Parts Catalogue to help you get the right parts. There is also a Resource Library on the Club website that includes virtually all the technical articles that have appeared in the Club Gazette and an on-line forum for instant answers to queries. The monthly, 92-page Gazette always contains a mixture of technical, historical and event reports and Club Members also receive the Club Directory that includes the ‘Good Garage Guide’ of Members’recommendations and a range of special offers, such as exclusive insurance policies plus discounts on parts and servicing.

When you have come out of the workshop there are a choice of 29 pub meetings to go to and well over 100 regional events spread across the UK and Ireland where you can share the good company of like-minded enthusiasts.

Two forthcoming big events this year for the Club are the National Concours in June at the Mercedes-Benz UK headquarters in Milton Keynes and the National Weekend – this year being held in and around Yorkshire in July. Membership costs just £38 per year if you pay by direct debit, plus a one-off £5 joining fee.
