Nothing beats a prestigious saloon for arriving in style. And there’s no shortage of some great classics – old and modern – to suit all tastes and budgets, as this delightful diverse dozen proves
BIGGEST CAT OF THEM ALL
The MK X didn’t die when the XJ6 came along in 1968 – it morphed into the biggest cat ever, the Daimler DS420. One of the most popular limos of them all, it was essentially a stretched 420G (by 21 inches) with a Daimler Sovereign frontal and the car survived in service until 1992 replacing the old stately Daimler Majestic Major with something more modern.
Apart from a bench front seat, the DS drives pretty much like a 420G and can see 110mph from that venerable 4.2-litre XK engine. When new it was some 50 per cent cheaper than a Rolls Phantom as well as being far more comfortable and enjoyable to drive. The DS remains a bargain because you can see prices from as little as £6000 to secure a quite fair one.
