A traditional alfa

Big brother to the Alfasud, the Alfetta stuck to its Alfa roots, relying upon that iconic twin cam engine (1.6, 1.8 and 2-litre) and rear wheel drive, but now with the gearbox mounted at the stern by the axle for near perfect weight distribution, clothed in a boxy but stylish saloon body. Aimed at the BMW buyer, the Alfetta felt like a modernised, roomier 1960’s Giulia and had a similar character about it, although the gearchange was poor (due to gearbox location) and the car became more understeer-prone due to the grippier ‘rear end’. There’s been a couple of beauties advertised at around £14,000 at classic dealers but you can easily nab a fair one for a third of this and with almost 500,000 made, look abroad for more choice.
