Looking for a classic coupe to tour around in? Here’s a great eight to consider

BMW 8 Series

Magnificent modern

£6000- £20,000

A glorious GT available in creamy V8 and tremendous V12 forms, you can pick this modern up for buttons although they are real liabilities because many were bought cheap and run on a shoestring by 3 Series owners with ideas above their station – and bank balance! There’s lots of expensive electronics to go wrong too and they usually will due to neglect. Top buy is the 850CSi but owners are fast cottoning on to their worth and truly good cars are commanding substantial sums.

Porsche 928

Best bargain gt around?

£6000- £20,000

Porsche designed this all new model to replace the aging 911 that clearly showed its links to the VW Beetle, plus move the carmaker into new upper class markets. However, history records that the front-engined V8-powered Porsche 928 did nothing of the sort despite being widely hailed as the World’s best GT when launched in the mid 1970s. Lack of appreciation (and we don’t mean financially) means that they are still cheap to buy (if not own) and can be great value if you find a solid, honest example. Just don’t run away with the idea that it’s an alternative to a 911 because the portly, 928 isn’t that sort of sports car but rather a firm-riding GT that just about qualifies as a 2+2. Don’t overlook the 944 range.

Ford Granada Ghia Coupe

Just an italian designer label?

£3000- £8,000+

A Ford in such high brow company you cry but putting badge snobbery aside and the Granada Ghia looks a good bet. It’s one of the roomiest 2+2 Coupés for a start and the well kitted out interior – care of Italian Ghia who Ford purchased in 1973 – is a vision in velour although but no worse than the Fiat 130 featured elsewhere! All Ghias came in V6 auto guise and performance is acceptable and they cruise well if the doors haven’t dropped promoting wind noise. Rare sights, so you can enjoy some inverted badge snobbery!

Peugeot 504 Coupe

French fancy that’s stylish and cultured yet cheaper than a Capri

£3000- £7000+

You’ve probably only seen this pretty Peugeot in pictures as they rarely turn up at shows let alone just tooling around on the road. Peugeot’s 504 coupé was penned by Pininfarina (as was the beautiful Ferrari-looking 406 of the 1990s – another great modern classic) and some 26,000 were made, so you’ll have better luck looking abroad for one. Launched in 1969, the car survived well into the 1980s and the top model used the same (Renault, Peugeot, Volvo) V6 also found in the DeLorean. In its day, this Peugeot was highly acclaimed and remains a coupé with more than a touch of French flair about it.

Audi 100S Coupe

Almost an Aston DBS?

£5500- £11,000

Not quite, although from a distance it’s easy to mistake this Audi for a DBS even though there’s no mistaking them once behind the wheel as the German is only a 1.9-litre. And yet the 100S’s combined good aerodynamics and high gearing make it a competent cruiser once wound up. Overall, the Audi is a very pleasing and roomy 2+2 that’s - rarer than a DBS and without sky high Aston screen prices, and running costs, too.

Fiat 130 Coupe

Boxing clever

£3000 -£8,000+

Fiat’s handsome if boxy looking 130 Coupé is worth owning on looks alone, unlike Pininfarina’s other effort of the same era, the Rolls-Royce Carmargue, although, of course the Italian is not as well built! Nor is that exotic sounding four-cam 3.2V6 as zippy as its specs suggests plus most came as an automatic. Compensations include good handling and a very 70’s interior. Cheap for what they offer but many cars are shabby and spoil this fine and all to rare GT.

Triumph Stag

Now a protected species

£5000 -£18,000

After a shaky start, the Stag has matured into a mellow, reliable, easy-owning sports roadster and coupé combined – our British Merc SL/SLC in other words. There’s plenty around and the car is backed by one of the best owners’ clubs around and an army of specialists. Not particularly fast or taut when it comes to handling but a very nice relaxing GT that’s still good value. A further appreciation of this car appears elsewhere in this issue.

Lancia Flavia

A tasteful choice

£10,000- £15,000+

If all Lancias to you are either rusty Betas and extrovert Integrales then you need to look to the swinging 60s when Lancia was a classy upmarket brand that appealed to the connoisseur. The Flavia is a spin-off from the saloon and introduced back in 1962 with power choices ranging from a 1500cc 90bhp up to the 2-litre model of 1971, wielding a more appropriate 126bhp although even this model isn’t fast and all feel a bit old fashioned. But with classy looks like this, who cares? Rust and parts supply are the main worries, naturally!
