The aircraft producer Saab turned to motor car manufacture to stay in business after the Second World War.

The resulting Project 91 Small Car emerged as the Saab 92; the prototype made its press debut in June 1947. The newcomer was radical for the time, featuring streamlined bodywork (wind tunnel developed, to provide minimum drag and hence maximum performance/fuel consumption), front wheel drive and a transversely mounted twin cylinder, two- stroke engine. This provided commendable performance plus the car handled well. Sixten Sason (design) and Gunnar Ljungstr (technical) worked together on the innovative 92 project.

Full production started at the end of 1949 (early examples were all green!).

In 1953 the model was improved; the revised version (92B) was available in a choice of colours, and featured a proper boot, larger rear window, plus a removable back seat. The 92 was produced until late 1955 (to be replaced by the new 93)

Arriving in Britain in the spring of ‘79, the new 900 models were longer and more luxurious than their predecessors, but retained the family resemblance. The front wheel drive hatchbacks (offered in three and fivedoor forms) were powered by two-litre engines providing a variety of outputs and performance levels from mild to wild. The Turbo variants were especially rapid and satisfying. Four-door saloon versions were introduced in 1980. The 175bhp 16 valve Turbo 16 arrived in the spring of 1984, providing superb pace, from rest and on the move, and a potential top speed of nearly 140 mph; a true modern classic. Another interesting variation on the theme was offered from 1984.

The 100bhp, two door Saab 90 saloon combined the frontal styling of the 99 and the rear end treatment of the 900; it was replaced in the autumn of 1985 by the two-door 900 saloon.
