F Word is Totally Acceptable
Incredibly the MGF is 20 years old yet you can pick one up for pennies. Partly that’s because of the number still on our roads, but it’s also due to the car gaining a poor reputation for reliability and build quality. And that’s a shame because the MGF was a fine attempt by MG to finally make a thoroughly modern sports car. Mid-engined, yet the handling is predictable and secure while the much ridiculed Allegro-based Hydragas suspension gave a saloon-like ride; the later conventionally sprung TF disappointed here. Fast in top VVC and Trophy guises, a good one is a serious sportster and all are ideal for touring. Some specialists are now offering fully refurbished cars and there’s excellent nationwide club support but the scrappage rate is high due to spares and value issues.
