Once the Golf paved the way for the generation of modern Volkswagens, the Polo slotted in neatly below, becoming the baby of the range. Today, the latest generation Polo is larger than a Mk1 Golf… The Polo was always a cut above the rest of the small hatchback herd and remains so, exuding a quality and class that belies its size and price. Least liked are the ‘breadvan’ generation of the 1980s, sweetest are the 1990’s Coupé‘s which even included a supercharged (G40) version. As the Polo lives in the shadow of the Golf, prices usually appreciably trail and as a rule, the later the car the better, which means very good indeed. Odd multi-coloured Harlequin (pictured) may become a classic.
