Logically, the comparison should be with the Nova and the later Corsa but we’ve stuck with the Chevette – 40 this year – because they can be such simple fun. Based upon an Opel platform but using Viva running gear and rear-wheel drive, they are a hit with the go-faster and rallying fraternity. Ignoring the homologation special HS and HSR which can be worth over £20K, there’s a choice of hatchback, saloon, estate and even a van although all are rare finds these days as they simply weren’t considered worth saving. All use 1256cc power and the Chevette always cried for more power as the handling was – and still remains – excellent.
