• GREAT CHARACTER • EXCELLENT OWNER SUPPORT • RISING VALUES

WHY BUY?

Four-cylinder TRs make good, robust, easy to own classics that possess a Morgan-like character but are much cheaper and easier to own and maintain. The six pot TR5/6 are much the same but have a brawnier engine and good speed.

DRIVING

The handling is antiquated but TR2-4 modls feel more agile than later six-cylinder TR5 and TR6. The later A is softer riding and purists prefer the handling of the earlier TR4.

WHAT TO PAY

Until a few years ago, four-pot TRs trailed the TR5/6 by a fair sum but this has changed and the gap can be small. Values generally start from £6000 for a running restoration project to £11,500 for a nicely restored car and perhaps around £20,000-£30,000 for a specimen. US left hand drive model. TR5/6 are cheaper but have detuned engines.

BODY AND CHASSIS

Rot is rife so inspect well. The chassis frame takes a big hit around the axle and suspension mounting points. Chassis outrigger rust can render a car scrap. A good test is to jack the car up and watch for the door gaps to alter.

ENGINE

Famous four-pot engine has almost limitless life because it can be simply re-sleeved. Six is as rugged but watch for general wear and head gasket failures. Don’t fear the fuel injection. Being a Triumph, you need to ascertain the state of the crankshaft washers.

RUNNING GEAR

The front suspension trunnions seize due to lack of lube but they also wear out too. It’s not overly expensive and worth replacing anyway before tackling any suspension mods. A vast majority went to the US and since repatriated. It’s always a good move to check the offside suspension and chassis extra carefully for ‘sideswipe’ damage.
