ALPINE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS
In its day, 50 years ago, the Tiger was the direct rival to the Healey and was far more than simply a V8-engined Sunbeam Alpine, as anybody who has tried to convert one will tell you! Developed by Shelby using a 4.2-litre Ford V8 that was also found in early Cobras, the 164bhp provided vivid performance for its time and became a real hot shot when the later 200bhp 4.7 V8 was slotted, although due to a quick cancellation of the model after Chrysler took control of Rootes by 1967, few came to the UK. Owners love them and prices reflect this with top cars selling easily for more than £30,000.
