VALUE WINS OVER VANITY
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say – and certainly Reliant’s Scimitar SS1 turns heads – but for the wrong reasons! Penned by Bill Towns, who styled the Aston Martin DBS would you believe, it looks very kit car like and a world away from the classy GTE namesake. Yet underneath those quirky looks lurks a highly competent trad sports car that carries on where the Frog-eye Sprite left off. Initially Escort Mk3-powered (1.4/1.6) the design came good when relaunched as the Sabre with Nissan turbo power. Inexpensive fun and certainly individual – like their owners.
