Herbie rides again

Volkswagen got there first with its pastiche but based upon the Golf, meaning a real role reversal being front-engined and front-wheel driven. The shape is unmistakably Beetle and there’s the handiness of a rear hatch although luggage space is minimal. There’s a wide choice, from easy owning diesels to rapid Turbos plus cultured cabrios. While the car tries, it’s a completely different animal to the original. Earliest versions were LHD which may carry some classic appeal in the future.
