GET THE MAX
The biggest problem for the A-Series is the breathing –
inlet and exhaust. The twin-box RC40 is the most effective exhaust, and can be had from Minispares for just £53.99 before you start incorporating a better Cooper S style manifold. Lumenition ignition from Moss costs £248 plus £15.95 for a distributor fitting kit and well worth it. Minispares also offers a selection of twin carb kits starting at just under £500, then think about a Cooper-style head at least. However, the ambitious would aim for a K series swap. Allspeed Engineering charges £650 for a front subframe adapted to take the K, which leaves £350 for an MoT-fail 90’s Rover as a donor.
HANDLING
So long as it’s in good order the suspension will handle the added power but better discs and pads are worth budgeting for plus adjustable dampers.
