SOLID, SENSIBLE & SATISFYING
The longer, roomier SLC spin-off to the R107 SL is one option but why not check out a W123 CE first? Made during the late 1970s and 1980s when they were built how you’d expect a Mercedes to be, the W123’s real quality lies in owner rather than driver satisfaction although all perform nicely enough – especially the 2.8-litre 185bhp straight six – and are at their best when cruising. Ten big ones should net one of the cleanest left and a decent one for half this although top CEs can nudge the £15K barrier.
