Strictly speaking, the SLK isn’t a sports car at all but earns its spurs in this feature by dint of the Merc’s sheer popularity, style, ease of ownership, value for money and a magnificent metal roof that makes this roadster an all year round fun thing. Launched 20 years ago, and based upon the C-Class saloon platform, the vast majority are automatics meaning real grunt only manifests itself in the high end models, but common to all is crisp handling. You can pick a decent SLK up for as little as £2000 but make sure that radical roof works properly or it can cost as much again to get it fixed!
