A delightful dozen that proves you can own a genuine classic sports car but without breaking the bank...
A BABY FERRARI
£1500- £5500+
When launched back in 1972, Fiat showed everybody else how to make a low cost yet serious sports car with the targa-top X1/9 and pundits moaned that this is what the next Midget should be like. A gem of a design, there’s a touch of engineering (rather than build quality) about the X1/9 that has the spirit and breeding of a Ferrari about it – drive one and you’ll see what we mean. Always demanding more power to tax that remarkable chassis, a move to 1500cc along with a five-speed transmission in 1979 added more fun as only the Italains know how. Today, they’re as cheap as a Midget or Spitfire although ownership isn’t half as easy. And they can sure rust!
