Years Ahead of its Time Yet an Also Ran

The 3000ME was a strange car, that took too long in making. First shown in 1973 but didn’t make it into the showrooms in 1979, the 3000ME never became the entry-level AC planned and just 100 or so were made. A clever mid-engined design using Ford Capri V6 power, it looked fairly like the original Toyota MR2, which surfaced just as the AC was being dropped, while the AC’s price meant that most chose an Esprit instead. Good performance but the handling needed further sorting. Given the car’s rarity, values remain cheap and there’s a high survival rate along with an enthusiastic club support.
