BEST MODEL: EXCEL

This is just the sort of market Colin Chapman was aiming at when he launched the front- engined Lotuses back in the mid 1970s, first with the hatchback Elite and then the fastback Eclat which became the Excel. If in good order – but too many aren’t – an excellent driver’s car as you expect from Lotus but in this company the cars lack refinement and engine cylinders. Build quality only really came good with the Toyota-aided Excel and all remain incredible bargains. For all their failings these oddly-styled Lotuses will become classics, mark our words!
