Reliant invented the sportshatch with its Scimitar GTE that, in its day, was a sophisticated sports holdall rivalling any BMW and Alfa and yet despite their qualities – and not to say that famous Royal connection (HRH Princess Anne has owned one since 1970) – the Scimitar continually fails to cut it as a classic. Pre-1975 cars are the more sporting to drive because afterwards they became bigger, heavier and flabbier but all offer quite astonishing value for money and a fine owners’ club for support. Plenty remain and about half wear a towbar!
