GO HOT AND COLD
First job given the K-series reputation for head gasket failure would be to fit a coolant level sensor (£126, Mike Satur) – this should help indicate any causes before failure; B&G sells a similar device. Mike Satur also offers a 52mm metal throttle body kit which is a direct replacement for the original 48mm, for £134. Combined with the Pipercross Viper induction kit (£197), you can make a 1.8i go like a VVC and make a VVC go like a 160 Trophy for a pittance. Uprated heads using standard valves cost around £400 for VC go – try Essex-based British Legends and fit a better stainless exhaust for a similar outlay.
ANCHORS AWAY
Bigger front brakes and grooved rears (£198 and £134) respectively, plus pads at £34 per set, are worth it, £500 for new dampers and £100 plus for re-gas and geometry check.
