Designed to replace the old Allegro the 1980’s, Maestro wasn’t a bad car at all and there was an MG version from the start. Weber-carbed, the original 1600 variant was under developed and those expensive carbs (which are now worth more than the actual car) rarely ran right. Originally, the MG used a Maxi-derived R-Series engine, replaced by the S-Series after less than 18 months. The 2.0i got it right however and the Turbo version is faster to 60 than an E-type, albeit far too unruly in the wet to enjoy until a vital suspension retune was fitted at the end of the decade. Not many left and are usually cheap as chips, they make a roomier alternative to a Golf and seem that bit classier than a GTE or XR3.
