HANDLING FIRST
Standard brakes are adequate, claims specialist 5-Speed, so £107 spent on a set of OE replacement pads will suffice.
We’ve heard of owners putting budget tyres on the front and upmarket tyres on the back, to bias the handling toward understeer for more predictable road manners. MX5s handle sweetly enough without suspension upgrades if in good order and shod with quality tyres, so we’d chuck what we had left at an uprated ECU and an exhaust.
CHEAP POWER
£300 buys a Starchip from BBR Tuning, which will add 10bhp without compromising economy – indeed, it could improve it while £359 takes a Jetex exhaust from the same source; stainless steel with a 2” bore to maximise torque and a choice of tailpipe designs. Heads and cams are next but it starts to get expensive then.
