AN UNSUNG SUPERCAR
Being honest, the original Esprit (above) wasn’t up to much until the S3 cars of 1980. It looked great but dynamically was scant advancement over the Europa that it shared the basic chassis with. The Peter Stephens-styled S4 variant sorted most of the wrongs and, in (sadly troublesome) V8 form, became a true Ferrari-beater. In contrast, the Jensen-Healeyderived ‘four pot’ provides as much pace as you can wish for especially when turbocharged. All are wrapped in a lovely body and most sell still at surprisingly affordable prices (apart from the rare Sport 300).
