A CHEAP SUPERCAR
Introduced just as the 914 was bowing out, this Lancia’s full title is Beta Montecarlo even though it shared only the engine and minor interior details with that infamous rusting saloon that ruined Lancia in the UK. Actually, Monte was originally to be called the Fiat X/20 and be big brother to the similar in concept X/19. Not especially fast (a slower model was available in the US) but the handling was always excellent – in the dry at least, because the first S1 cars were prone to locking its front brakes. Lancia withdrew the car because of this and other issues before introducing the sorted S2 in 1980. Celebrating its 40th this year, a Monte is a baby Ferrari that’s great value.
