You need a ‘six’ or V8 to make a coupé go as well as it looks! Here’s a delightful dozen to consider; all prices relate to typical average-to-good examples
A TRUE JAGUAR CLASSIC – AT LAST!
£8000
It had to happen eventually but there are strong signs that the once unloved Jaguar XJ-S is finally a classic Coventry cat 40 years since its controversial launch. Frankly it’s best to ignore the V12s as the straight six-powered variants made since the early 1980s are easier to own, more than quick enough (the 4-litre is almost as fast as a V12) and surprisingly frugal with owners reporting up to 30mpg on a run, especially the (smoother, crisper) 3.6 model with its five-speed manual gearbox. Forget the old rumours – a good well sorted XJ-S is a joy to drive and at under £10,000 still amazing value but we wary of 1991-93 cars as they are the worst for rusting say some specialists.
